Shikowitz

Where did you go to school?

Ms. Shikowitz attended Ithaca College for Music Education for her undergraduate degree. She attended Queens College for her master’s degree, where she now teaches as an adjunct professor.

How long have you been at Halsey?
Ms. Shikowitz has been teaching at Halsey for nine years.

What would you be doing if you were not a teacher?
If Ms. Shikowitz wasn’t a teacher she’d probably be…a teacher. If she was not in the public school system, she’d probably be busy creating community choirs. Her dream is to recreate a choir she participated in during college, a choir made of retirement home residents with dementia and school age children.

Why did you get into education?
Ms. Shikowitz always loved music, singing, performing, bonding with others through these activities, and babysitting. It seemed natural to combine her love of music with her love of children, and to give the experiences that gave her so much value to other young people.

What is your favorite thing about teacher?
Her favorite thing about being a teacher is seeing the “light bulb” moment in her students. They often wonder why Ms. Shikowitz makes them rehearse so much and practice over and over again. The day after the chorus concerts, the children are beaming and so proud of all their hard work, and they finally get why I was working them so hard!

Any hobbies or interests that we do not know you would like to share?
Ms. Shikowitz really loves pugs and hopes to own one someday. She also loves traveling, cooking, watching documentaries, and salsa dancing (poorly).
