Q & A with Mrs. Braterman

Q & A Image

Where did you go to school?
I went to the University of Pittsburgh for undergrad and Columbia, Teacher’s College for graduate school.

How long have you been at Halsey?
This is my 18th year at Halsey.  I have been here my whole teaching career.

What would you be doing if you were not a teacher?
I can’t imagine doing anything else.  I love teaching and I love teaching at Halsey because I love the diversity of the students.  It is my favorite part of teaching here.

Why did you get into education?
I always knew that I wanted to work with kids, but, for a long time, I wanted to be a psychologist.  Towards the end of college, I was having second thoughts.  I had been helping several of my college friends with their English papers all through college and they suggested that I become and English teacher.  As soon as they suggested it, I knew it was the right fit for me.  So, I applied to graduate school.  I grew up in Philly, but I did not get into graduate school there.  I was meant to come to New York. I met my husband a month after moving here and I never left.  (I don’t know if you want all that, but, I thought it was interesting.)

What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?
That is easy: my students.   I love getting to know them and watching them grow.

Any hobbies or interests that we do not know you would like to share?
I love hiking, running, swimming, and being in nature.
