Dear Parents and Guardians,
As a district, we recognize the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education to strengthen our curriculum and pedagogical practices (e.g., personalize learning, facilitate efficiency, increase student engagement, and to prepare students for the emerging AI economy.) As a result, I am writing to share that District 28 will pilot the implementation of NYCPS Artificial Intelligence Platform in four of our schools to assess its potential in our educational system.
To ensure safe use of Artificial Intelligence, the New York City Department of Education has partnered with Microsoft to create a safe Artificial Intelligence platform that students can use in a responsible manner. We are also working closely with the Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT) to ensure that the implementation is safe and productive for students, parents, teachers, and our school leaders. As a result, the version of AI that students will use is restricted and customized to ensure that inappropriate content is not accessed. To facilitate transparency, all parent coordinators for the participating schools will have access to the platform to demonstrate how the AI tool is used and applied in the classrooms. Presently, we will be able to view student-entered information, however, the tool does not presently enable us to monitor and respond to students’ statements in real-time.
Our goal is to create a learning environment where AI technologies empower rather than replace the human aspects of education. We embrace these technologies cautiously to prepare students for a future where these tools are everywhere.
We will provide continuous support and routinely audit AI use, update policies and training as needed. We believe that embracing AI will significantly enhance our student's learning experience, and we look forward to sharing the outcomes after the pilot has ended.
